What is Texas Concrete Cutting?

road currently under construction at several levels to increase traffic

Texas concrete cutting follows the same process as concrete cutting anywhere in the United States. It includes techniques used to cut into concrete, stone, terra-cotta, or brick.

Sometimes concrete cutting and breaking is performed to remove small sections of concrete to build doorways or utility holes, and other times it is needed as a part of demolition. When performed by professionals, concrete cutting follows a safe process to avoid damage to people or property.

As is expected, different concrete projects require specialized concrete cutting tools. For example, concrete wall sawing is usually done with a circular blade attached to a climbing machine for walls and ceilings. Slab cutting and slab sawing require similar saws, but do not need to be used free-hand.

Core drilling requires a diamond-tipped saw shaped like a tube that can drill perfectly circular holes into concrete and rock. Diamond concrete cutting is known for being precise and reliable with jobs as small as a half-inch diameter hole to 72-inch diameter shafts.

Curb cutting uses flat sawing methods and concrete cutting machines to create easy entrances for driveways, parking garages, or crosswalks.

Any of these concrete cutting and coring processes might be required on big Texas concrete cutting projects such as dams, chemical plants, water silos, airports, sporting arenas, and industrial projects. However, concrete cutting is also very useful for home remodeling and smaller projects like egress windows, door cutting, or trench cutting.

Why Use Concrete?

Concrete can be used virtually anywhere. It is estimated that three tons of concrete are used each year per person on the earth. And only around 66 percent of concrete is used by state and local governments for infrastructure. That means the remaining 44 percent is used for building businesses, homes, and millions of other projects.

It’s easy to see why so much concrete is used around the world. It is energy efficient, cutting heating and cooling bills significantly. And when light-colored concrete is used, it reflects heat rather than absorbing it like asphalt. This helps reduce urban heat islands and air conditioning needs in the summer.

Concrete also produces little waste because it can be made on demand in any quantity. On the demolition side, concrete can be pulverized and recycled to make more concrete or other purposes.

The History of Concrete

Beyond its economical benefits, the world has been using concrete as a building material for thousands of years. In fact, concrete’s long history has proved that it is structurally sound and versatile.

The Egyptians added volcanic ash to concrete so it would set underwater, and Chinese builders added sticky rice to the concrete used for the Great Wall. A few centuries later, Romans used horse hair to keep their concrete from cracking.

Concrete structures have a lifespan two to three times longer than other building materials because they do not burn, rust, or rot. For example, the Roman Pantheon, built in 126 A.D., is the oldest unreinforced concrete dome at about 1,889 years old!

Today, concrete is primarily made from limestone, fly ash, slag cement, or silica fume, many of which are byproducts of power plants and manufacturing companies. It is a sustainable building material that doesn’t draw from waning resources and it is completely safe.

How to Choose a Concrete Cutting Specialist

If you choose to use time-tested concrete for your projects, you will need a qualified concrete cutting company offering precision concrete cutting services. You will have to choose from a number of concrete cutting contractors who seem to offer similar capabilities. Here is how you can choose the best concrete cutter for your project.

  1. Research concrete cutting companies in your area—Whether you have concrete cutting jobs in Dallas or Houston, you will find more than one available, speedy concrete cutting option nearby. Narrow your list to two or three companies.
  2. Look for services you are interested in—Do you need concrete wire sawing, concrete drilling, rumble stripping, demolition, building, or something specialized? Pick out a few services you know you’ll need and see which companies provide them.
  3. Request quotes—Request quotes from the companies you are interested in to see how prices compare. Remember that quality is as important as the price for your project if you want it to last as long as the Pantheon.
  4. Compare safety and customer ratings—Safety and customer ratings can show you if companies are reliable, licensed, and worthy of your business. You also don’t want to be responsible for fines or other repercussions if safety regulations aren’t followed.
  5. Interview possible companies—Once you have a feel for your candidate companies, interview the managers to see how they will handle your projects and make sure they understand your timeline.
  6. Choose the right company—When you have completed your research, choose the right company for your project.
